Squall Leonhart - FF VIII by Valesco Squall Leonhart - FF VIII by Valesco
Squall Leonhart of Final Fantasy VIII. I haven't played the game yet on my own, but a friend of mine claims it's one of the best game stories ever set. therefore i gotta know the game and i really like the character's design (especially the handsome, tacit young man :D:D).

done with pencils and paper (:D cheap version, each, no other detail available. sorry to show you only a cutout of the original, and sorry for the bad quality. is both the fault of my very old scanner.

i composed squall in my own version here, since the quality of the PS2 game makes one to clarify his structures :D. i know that there's still something wrong with his right eye, but once again i didn't have the heart to correct it further more.

i'd really appreciate comments on my technique (which i used here first: the crossing of dashes)

enjoy!

I think your cross hatching works really effectively as a background. Love his hair :D

God, but I hate Squall... He looks like a snob, if he's not one himself.

Doesn't matter. You deserve creative criticism.

The reason this thing doesn't quite stand out is the contrast. You need to work on this. Did you use reference for this thing? If you do, try to make it as dark and as sharp as the reference. If you do it without, then mark the spot where the blackest part is located, and shade it as dark as you can. Then do the same with the second darkest, only make it a little lighter. Do the same until you reach the whitest area, where you can leave it the way it is. Widen the range of the blackness. White should be really white and black should be really back. That's the key to sharpness and high contrast. In any case, be decisive. I had the same problem when it came to contrast. Just don't be afraid that you might damage it if you make it too dark. I had that fear and the drawings I drew were so blurry they look so bad when I see them now. Your pic looks all white, but you can fix it.

You did well on hair, and you have the right concept of doing it. The only thing you need is more sharpness and contrast. Black must be black, not grey. Try doing it over again without erasing the old layer.

The likeness is pretty good, BTW. Even if it's very blurry, I still know it's him. That's telling something. Good job, but next time, do better.

hi,
thanks very much for that honest criticism, i will try harder on that (i even tried to, compared to the last portraits). for a reference i used only one simple look at him on a pic, how he is basically constituted^^ so i did the main work out of my mind.
thanks very much.

Hmm, then you've done a very good job on the likeness. One look and you can draw him. Really good.

Nice job, I also think FF VIII has one of the best game stories.

You have used the cross hatching technique quite effectively here, another technique you could try is the circulism technique which allows more smooth complex gradients, the technique you have used here still looks good though, just keep practicing and improving on it. Also try to get more value and contrast in the drawing (basically more dark grey or black... something I also need to work on).

Overall though good job =)
